wow thats weird. Well according to Microsoft, "Excel has the ability to perform processes on multiple threads. Older printer drivers only work with one thread and therefore can crash Excel when multiple threads are used."
As you indicated, there are problems between Excel and HP that go back more than a year with no acceptable fix or even a good acknowledgement of the problem. I have an HP 3180 that will cause Excel 2010 to fail. Using a different printer is the workaround. One person switched to Excel 2003 as a workaround. I

solution: Use a newer printer.
