No one is really sure about when Sun Ra was born or if he was born at all. He appeared on Planet Earth sometime around 1914, took quickly to piano, worked with Fletcher Henderson in the 30's and was himself a bandleader by the 50's. A revolutionary who linked the African-American experience, ancient Egyptian mythology and his own vision of the space age, Sun Ra's music was marginalised and maligned by most, even the jazz avant-garde of the time. It would take decades for his influence to seep into the broader musical world.

Taken from Ep 1 of Subsonics.

  • led his own bands in 30s - actually with henderson band in late 40s-nice overview esp solo keyboards

  • he predicted our times.

  • Love that great interview clip of John Gilmore. I wonder if he, Pat Patrick, Ronnie Boykins, Oloe Emoe, and June Tyson aren't playing some extra special music, wherever they are now.

  • Alif Lam Mim Ra

  • @KingOfUm "Not too many like him, in or out music."

you can say that again. i adore his way of creating a myth around himself. and what a myth!!

also, his message was a great one, and still very relevent now, even more so, as it is no longer black or white.

nowadays the slaves arent just black, we are all the slaves, and our society is the plantation... and we must be strong and fight for liberation. and music is still the same vessel upon which change can ride.

  • Absolutely; I think that might be why his band was so fond of him, because he was such a genuine leader and artist. Not too many like him, in or out music.

  • our lives are made all that more wondeful by people like sun ra.

who says we need be dull when we can shine like this man.

  • I love the tenure of June Tyson's voice.

  • its discipline 27, from the album live at praxis '84. it's on spotify
