Ever heard of Audioslave? It was RATM without Zack... They were still politically active while they did their own projects, even Zack. Now RATM is touring again, and they said they didn't plan on making any more albums, and that they think their music is still relevant to the current administration (at the time it was the Bush administration), not to mention they said that every president from Truman up (including Bush) Should be hanged and shot. So, no, they didn't disappear.
