Bede BD-5s were an immensely popular but tiny homebuilt kit aeroplane design of the early nineteen seventies. They are now very rare, partly at least because of a poor accident record, although they are delightful to fly. For a while there were two at Serpentine Airfield, Western Australia. Here they display their manoeuvrability and speed.

  • Is this technically a Ultralight or do you need a license for this?

  • Perfectly safe if well built and well flown. As with any specialized airplane, there is a technique to safely flying one. I know...I used to own one :)

  • You got to have some big ones to fly this. It is a fine widdow-maker.

  • This thing with jet is much much better but this is good too :)

  • awesome airplane to do formation flight, is it a GA airplane or ULM ?

  • 5/5

  • Although it is cool to imagine it.

  • You could take one down with a machine gun.
