These ruins stand close to the track of a defunct railway, on the eastern bank of the Liddel Water about 1 mile from Newcastleton. Just a small part of the original substantial tower remains. Built into the wall is a weathered stone tablet dated 1583 which bears the coat of the arms of Armstrong and the initials SA and EE which represent Sim Armstrong and his wife Elizabeth Elliot.
The Tower is believed to date from the 12th century.
The Lairds of Mangerton were, by tradition, always head of the Armstrong Clan.
Very interesting, glad people are documenting even the vaguest of archaeological remains for the the future. Sad to think of Sim Armstrong and his wife leaving little behind but an overgrown pile of stones and a coat of arms in a farm wall. . .

Sad ruins but then how much will remain of our habitats a thousand years from now?
