Georgi Vinogradov, tenor; Oleg Razumovsky, baritone; and the Red Army Ensemble conducted by Alexander Alexandrov.
Alexandrov (1883-1946; photo) founded the Red Army Ensemble (often called the Alexandrov Ensemble) in 1928, arranging for it and conducting it until his death, earning the rank of General and both popular and political favor. Among other works, he composed the Soviet National Anthem, chosen by Stalin during the Great Patriotic War (World War II) to replace 'The Internationale'; following some hesitation, the music was re-chosen, with rewritten lyrics, in 2000 to be the National Anthem of [post-Communist] Russia.
This performance was issued in the USA in 1954 on a Colosseum long-play disc, number CRLPX014, with the assurance printed on the jacket-- understandable as hot war (in Korea) became Cold War, and McCarthyite Red-hunting became an American obsession-- that "No part of the proceeds from this recording enures to the benefits [sic] of the Union of Soviet Socialistic [sic] Republics, or any of its agents or representatives".
Because I take my responsibility as a YouTube Youser very seriously, I feel compelled to give the synopsis of this piece printed in the liner notes, although I also give warning that reading the synopsis may be hazardous to your enjoyment--
"A medley of Ukrainian songs. Sung about the snowball tree-- a yearning girl in a night with a shining moon, dreaming about her native land, and everything for her beloved Cossack. Whistles are heard, and their song promising to come back to their loved ones."
Why not just listen...?
