The galloping Loyalsock Creek and Hagermans Run shaking the ground we stood on as boulders were swept downstream along the bottom of its stream bed and the sandbagging activities along the Susquehanna were just a few of my many vivid memories of the time when Agnes rained down upon us. I also won't forget the dude from the National Guard barking out orders while standing on the hood of his jeep on the South Side of the Maynard Street bridge. That guy organized the hell out of us in no time!

Dr. Jon Nese's WeatherWhys (WxYz) segment on the 23June2010 edition of Weather World which commemorated the 38th anniversary of Hurricane Agnes
Hurricane Agnes was a 1972 storm that proved that a hurricane does not have to be strong to cause extensive damage. Agnes never did strengthen beyond a Category 1 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. Most of the damage caused by the storm occurred after landfall. From June 20th to 23rd, the low pressure system hardly moved as it lingered near the Pennsylvania/New York border. Over 15 inches of rain fell in this region and flooding, especially in the Susquehanna River basin, devastated many towns.
