Entire streets were reduced to rubble. Bodies of victims are piling up on the streets. The Red Cross estimates that as many as 50,000 people died. Victims wander the streets looking for food, water, and stable shelter as tremors continue to strike the area.

SOUNDBITE (Creole) Victim:
My house was destroyed. We are sleeping in the street, we have no home to go to. And we have no money or anything to eat.

More than 3 million people live in the capital. They are faced with the hard job of taking stock of their losses.

For many, the miracle of survival is tempered with the uncertainties of the next few days. Food and water are scarce, and international teams are only now beginning to set up humanitarian relief and recovery operations.

The UN peacekeeping mission headquarters was also flattened in the quake. Chinese recovery teams are on the ground, beginning what has become a recovery mission.

Thirty-six UN personnel have been confirmed killed, and nearly 200 more are still missing. One UN security officer walked free after surviving nearly two days trapped in the rubble. ............................................................................................................
