Battle At The Boat 78
On the card will be a 5 round featured bout between Federal Way's, "Vicious" Vincent Thompson (4-0, 1 KO) and Everett's, Villi "The Tongan Warrior" Bloomfield (9-4-1, 4 KO's). These two have already fought twice as amateurs twelve years ago, and both times Bloomfield defeated Thompson. Thompson's undefeated professional record will be on the line, as he faces his former nemesis, in hopes to settle the score, once and for all.

UPDATE: Vincent Thompson undefeated

TACOMA -- Muhammad Ali used to like to say "Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee" to describe his boxing style.

A young Federal Way fighter took that adage to heart and used its message to beat Vili "The Tongan" Bloomfield Saturday night in a five-round pro heavweight fight at the Emerald Queen I-5 Casino.

Thompson is now undefeated in his first five pro fights.

"There's no one who can stop my speed," Thompson said, while his father, and trainer, Calvin, unwrapped his taped hands after the fight. "Speed kills. You can have all the power you want but I've got the grace of Ali."

Thompson, a southpaw, controlled the fight with his quick right jab, doubling up occasionally and developing his combination punches from it. He won the Battle of the Boat 78 undercard match unanimously, 50-45 from all three judges.

"I'm so determined, I'm so ready, man," Thompson said. "I don't care who they've got out there in the Pacific Northwest, I'm going to make them look stupid."

Bloomfield, who wore a native Tongan printed name -- "A Warrior" -- on his trunks, was on the defensive most of the night, crouching, ducking, slipping and rope-a-doping.

He survived the best Thompson could throw at him on that night, particularly in rounds two and four when Thompson fired off a swift barrage of combinations that landed more often than not.

"Vincent executes his punches well, said Bloomfield's manager Bill McDonald, "and he has great speed. He will need to set down on his punches more in order to score some knockouts."

When Thompson ended the second round with a flurry of punches and began the third round by sticking hard jabs, the crowd, perhaps sensing a knockout, started chanting Vinny, Vinny in unision, but Bloomfield again weathered the storm.

"Vili (9-5-1) did not fight up to his best Saturday night," McDonald said. "A lot of reason is attributed to Vince's speed and dedication to winning the fight.

"Style makes fights and Vince's style and fight plan were enough to beat Vili," McDonald added. "Vili is a very skilled fighter on certain occasions."

Thompson landed his hardest punch of the night when he connected with hard right hand to Bloomfield's cheek in the fourth round.

Thompson, who obviously was ahead on points, sailed through the fifth round despite a smattering of boos for the boxers' inaction.

"I think every round was my best round because I whupped him unanimously," Thompson said. "He didn't even touch me. Am I still pretty?"

In the cruiserweight main event, a packed affair put on by Brian Halquist Productions, Jason Douglas (8-2) beat Brent Urban (6-3-1) by a seventh-round TKO and in the 133-pounder co-main, Francisco Reyes (6-1) defeated Heder Rivas (6-2).

Darlington Agha (5-0) beat Nelson Zepeda (9-4-1) by TKO and Sylvestor Barron defeated Freddie Miller (2-3-1) in other fights.

Thompson returns to action Oct. 16 at the Silver Reef Casino in Ferndale against an opponent to be announced
