The United States Navy and the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom are the two most powerful Naval Forces in the world, they are both continuously deployed around the world, taking both leading and supporting roles in global naval activities.
Destroyers in the 21st century are the largest escort class ships, In the Royal Navy destroyers are charged with the Air Defence of capital ships such as Air Craft Carriers, Fleet Tankers and Amphibious Assault Ships. In The United States Navy they are a more versatile platform performing several duties from fleet protection to patrolling and escorting tasks.
This is my second video in the series comparing the ships of the Royal Navy with those of the United States Navy. In this video the two main classes of destroyer in both navys, The new Type 45 "Daring Class" Air defence Destroyer of the Royal Navy and the Arleigh Burke class Multi-Role Destroyer of the United States Navy.
The Type 45 Destroyer program was one of the first of many programs with the aim of upgrading the Royal Navy with the intention of meeting the challenges of the 21st century, Including Air Craft Carriers, Amphibious Assault Ships, Submarine Forces, Destroyers and eventually Frigates. The First ship in the class HMS Daring was comissioned in 23 July 2009.
The Arleigh Burke class Destroyers first comissioned in 1991 are the workhorses of the United States navy, with over 55 built they are the most numerous warship class in the world. With the lessons learned by the Royal Navy in the Falklands War the Arleigh Burke class was designed with extensive defense against low flying high speed missiles but have evolved into a more versatile platform to provide one of the best escort ships in the world.
@eromacque I agree with this assessment 100%..RN and USN are friends and allies but
when a TYPE 45 faces an hostile Arleigh Burke in a ship-to ship confrontation,I wouldn't want to be in Type 45

@nikobrown1990 It doesn't matter when Burke was designed mate.
Burke is an impressive fighting platform .Type 45 is an expensive piece of show material.
Your analogy with mobile phones is amusing, I have a better one..
Type 45 is a 9mm automatic with 15 rounds in the magazine. Arleigh Burke is an M-16 assault rifle with 30 rounds 5.56mm magazine plus a M203 granate launcher !

@nikobrown1990 I see Brits feel insulted when someone attacks the Type 45 and they have good reason as they have paid an enourmous ,outrageous amount of money for a warship which is designed to function as a platform for 48 anti air missile only. They seem to forget that the last and the updated version of Arleigh Burke destroyers are more advanced than Type 45. 14.000 tons Zumwalt class is a different league..

it is an insult to compare the Type 45 to the Arleigh Burke, the Burke was designed back in the late 1980s and wasn't launched until 1991 (the ship was designed with the aim of fighting against numerous USSR warships/planes/subs). This is like comparing a phone designed in the 1990s to a modern smartphone, they are built with completely different aims in mind!
Today phones require internet access, high resolution cameras e&c.
A more realistic comparison would be to the Zumwalt class.

The Type 45s are superb warships. Absolutely. And it's impossible to argue with the Royal Navy's competence or esprit. The Arleigh Burkes, however, are superior warships. Here's why: More SAMS, included ABM Standard-3s being deployed. 2) Actual anti-ship missiles are carried. 3) TLAM-launching capability. The Darings cannot attack land targets. (Again, like Harpoons, there's "provision for". 4) There are 61(!) Arleigh Burkes. There will only be 4 Darings.

Two incredible ships! Can't deny that, the best destroyers currently sailing. HMS dauntless is currently deployed in the south Atlantic safe guarding the Falklands, and Argentina wouldnt be able to do anything! The power of One ship holding a country back! Scary how powerful a fleet would be with these ships in it

The missile (Aster 30) is rated at up to 120km. Beyond that it can only hurl insults.
The 120 km also assumes that you're obliging enough to be at sufficient altitude, to compensate for the curvature of the Earth. In short, Sampson radar has no advantage over the Aegis system which has a detection range of 160-180 km which is more than enough to engage 100 targets with 96 missiles ! Sampson can detect 800 targets and engage them with 48 missiles ! I would feel much safer with Burke.

@PlaneAU Look, they say Sampson radar is superior to anything in terms of range and number of targets it can detect and engage .It has a detection range of 400 km but this is rubbish you can't engage anything from that distance Unless of course you have discovered something that can negate the 9 degree change in surface horizon?

@PlaneAU Mate, its not about my dick is bigger than yours but about the technology.
Aegis System is a proven, and very very advanced system. No other NAVY, other than the RN has opted for Daring, including Australia.Daring is pretty much a single mission destroyer with limited capability,RN paying more than 1 billion Pounds for a ship that can launch only 48 missiles? Come on ! admitted Daring is of a superior design vis-a-vis Burke but all things considered its not more advanced.
