I think if you look at the facts you can't deny that Hans' record at both domestic and the World stage was superior. Even Erik has been quoted as saying that Hans was the better rider and John Berry makes some interesting observations when comparing the record of both. It's difficult, if not impossible, to compare riders from different eras but the best rider ever, and I think that most reasonable people would agree, was the great Ivan Mauger whose record was superior to none!

Sorry have to disagree. If you study the race (I was there) the Americans were riding a perfect line only for then to drop down on the line allowing Erik to ride the dirt! Even Sam Ermolenko commented on the race in his book! As for Erik being the best rider ever? Have to disagree. Compared to Hans Nielsen there is no comparison. Statistics prove otherwise (both at domestic & World level) and Han's team riding skills were second to none.

I grew up watching this guy at Dudley wood, used to speak to us in the pits. Even promised he'd beat Nielsen in heat 1 v Oxford 1 night so my mum would buy his jacket he had out. Awesome rider and cruelly injured far too early, dunno what that comments about saying best bike, the guy was class, 88 run off beat Nielsen by 25 machine lengths, always the man for the big occasion

Not sure about it being the greatest speedway race ever (although it has to be up there considering the pressure he must have been under) but I have to agree about Erik being the greatest rider ever :D
