This was the last Olympics, I believe, where headgear was allow. They should really have never been allowed IMO. What if the cap blows off the head and hits a runner behind in the head or face. Also, if the race ends in a photo finish with a lean - such as this did - usually it's the head position that is checked on the photo against the finish line. A cap would make that a bit more difficult to discern.

He ran even quarters so he'd have something left at the end. He ran a very smart race for his style.

From what I saw, the Russian barely acknowledged Wottle. He was talking to the Kenyan or the camera man behind him when Wottle walked up to him to shake hands. I don't think he ever made eye contact with Wottle or even shook hands before Wottle just walked away.

I remember watching this as a 12 yr. old and I've never forgotten what a wonderful moment is US Olympic history. It still gives me goosebumps!
