A MIDI track is not an audio track. Instead, a MIDI track holds MIDI data from software-based instruments that tells the computer what notes are being played, how hard those notes are being played and how long the notes are being played for.
MIDI tracks are used with software-based instruments, which means the sounds that are reproduced are not acoustic audio waves.
To create a MIDI track, navigate to the top menu bar and click Track -- New.
In the New Tracks dialog box, choose MIDI Track from the appropriate drop down menu.
Notes on a MIDI track are based on a piano because piano is the most universal instrument.
From there, the notes can be read by the computer and translated into the sounds of other instruments, such as a saxophone or a trumpet.
If you want to manually add notes on a MIDI track, first select the Free Hand Pencil Tool from the top tool bar.
You can then use the pencil tool to create notes on the MIDI track. The differentiation between light gray and dark gray represent the different keys on a piano.
Dark gray represents the black keys, while light gray represents the white keys. Adding notes manually is very tedious and time consuming.
The pencil tool is usually best reserved for editing notes on the MIDI track. Also, keep in mind that you cannot add Inserts or Sends to a MIDI track.
