On Thursday, June 25, 2009, this peregrine falcon landed on my balcony on the North Side of Chicago. He (or she) then proceeded to yell at me loudly for several minutes before flying away.

I originally thought it was a red-tailed hawk. Thanks to
ergmsg for setting me straight!

After taking the video I noticed 3 different falcons perched on a nearby building. Hopefully that means they live in the neighborhood and I will be seeing more of them. If so then I will try and get more video of them, which I will post.

  • The fledgling with leg band 08 is from a nest at 5821 North Broadway. See the Chicago Peregrine Falcon Blog for more details.

  • Oh wow! Thanks for the info! That makes sense because that building is very close to here. I can see it from my window.

  • It's a peregrine falcon --- Likely a fledgling.

Consider yourself lucky to have this opportunity.

  • Thank you for the ID! I didn't consider that it could be a peregrine falcon because the map I saw said that they don't live anywhere near here. But after further research I now see that there are some peregrine falcons living in Chicago. Very cool!

  • If you look closely you can see that the bird has 2 ID bands on its left leg.
