http://www.knme.org - Born near Mexico City in 1907, Frida Kahlo lived in the shadow of her renowned muralist husband for much of her married life. Her paintings were labeled "surrealistic" because they dealt with intense and very personal images her childhood bout with polio, a bus accident that nearly claimed her life, and her tumultuous marriage to Diego Rivera. Frida met Diego when she was 17, and their union was passionate but rocky. Diego had many affairs, the most destructive with Frida's younger sister, Christina. The couple divorced in 1940 but remarried the same year. It was during this time that Frida's career began to soar her artwork was selling and she was attaining a reputation of her own. Her health, on the other hand, was deteriorating. She had undergone nearly 30 operations on her back and foot and now her leg was faltering. She was often bedridden, creating her small 12" x 15" self portraits in her sick room. In 1953, her right leg had to be amputated. Her spirits fell further and she died in July, 1954.
