Winter Garden and its nearby town of Oakland were in the heart of the citrus growing area. Clermont, further to the west, boasted a tower (still standing) where you had an unlimited view of the groves. Sadly most of the groves are gone now, the victim of repeated freezes, and in their place are thousands of new homes. The museum gives a nice historical view of the town..tourism was big business, and large wooden hotels were in vogue. Hoyle Pounds, the first local tractor dealer was an inventor, and designed a rubber tire that replaced the primitive steel wheels and aided traction in the sand. There were literally hundreds of different labels for the fruit that was shipped from the packing houses. Even Elvis Presley evidently stopped in the area on a tour before he became a legend. The Cadillac he bought for his mama "Elvis Rose" is pictured..he never traded or sold that car, and now it's at his home "Graceland".

  • Cicero Hadley "C.H." Johnson was a old mayor of this town,he was my grandfather...

  • @RL968 Hey, Robert! Thanks for checking the video...and nice to have a connection to the history of Winter Garden! This is a great town museum...gives people a little flavor of the history of the town and the people in it!

Thanks for the comment! :) Jack

  • What was your favorite part of the museum?

  • @benjamen13 Hey, Benjamen! I would say checking out the caboose that was in front of the Museum, and I guess technically a museum exhibit. Inside, I would have to say the pictures of things as they appeared years ago..including the photos of the high school graduation maybe 50 years ago. The old orange crate labels are interesting too..they are works of art! Thanks! :) Jack

  • Another very interesting video, Jack, this looks like a great place to visit :)

  • @drewerz01 Hey, Mike! It is really interesting to find out the heritage of a place...things make more sense if you know where the community came from...and the caboose and grove vehicles make it much more than display cases and old photos. Thanks! :) Jack
