  • You have a lot to be proud of. Growing in in calif I never liked how people would make fun of the mountain people or say the typical stereo types.. Funny thing was I wished when I was kid in the 70's that I could visit the hills & hollows that I would see pictures of. To eat the food made their and most of all hear the music. I had such a great respect for those people and culture. I was always afraid that they would not like me or think I was a outsider or something. They been so nice to me.

  • Guess i'm one of them hill folk. Look at us like you look at our confederate flag, if you dont like it, keep your mouth shut before you get shot.

  • Amen. i live in the blue ridge in virginia, i've been half away around the world, and i wouldnt trade my mounains for anything. my culture, music...any of it.

  • Correction, Iris Dement sings this song in the movie. My apologies.

  • Please forgive my attribution of the singing of this song to Gillian Welch (Iris Dement was the singer). Welch does and excellent job on a companion CD for the Songcatcher.

  • Thank you for posting this. Gillian Welch does a wonderful job in singing this song ("Pretty Saro"). I am saddened by some of the posts. I was born and raised in Appalachia and grew up singing these songs. We really didn't think about whether or not others cared for them. I am pleased that many do enjoy them. I'm not sure how many people at home in the hills sing these songs the way I was taught or even if they bother to sing them anymore at all (this was before a lot of outside influence)
