Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi left late Tuesday for London to co-chair with his British counterpart Gordon Brown the first meeting of the climate finance group due to be held on Wednesday in London, APA learns here on Tuesday.

It is to be recalled that on 12th February 2010, the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon selected Brown and Meles to co-chair the new High-level Advisory Group on Climate Change Financing that will work to mobilize the financing promised for climate change during the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen last December.

Meles was selected by the African heads of states to represent Africa at the on-going climate change negotiations, the first of which was held in Denmark in December 2009.

The London meeting will discuss in details on how to mobilize the pledge made to developing countries, especially for Africa.

The developed countries had promised to give Africa annually $ 10 billion for the coming three years and 50 billion by 2020 to tackle the impact of climate change.

Africa, which contributes almost nothing to the climate change, is pushing the developed nations to compensate it for the damage it is facing by the climate change.

The UN Secretary-General established the advisory group to study the potential sources of revenue for financing, mitigation and adaptation activities in developing countries, and to make progress on this key issue in the course of 2010.

A follow up meeting of the Copenhagen climate change forum is due to be held this year in Mexico where Meles will lead the African negotiators team.
