Reeling from the worst polling numbers in the history of the Liberal party, some insiders are discussing a center-left merger with the New Democrats. The effort is designed to consolidate the center-left vote, similar to the merger of the Progressive Conservatives and the Canadian Alliance in the early 2000's which consolidated the right.

  • This seems like a great idea, the Liberal-Democrats could finally pose a strong opposition party to Harper's conservative dynasty. The only problem would be the ultimate power struggle as to who is going to lead the party, what the policies should be, etc. But if you work that out, great idea.

  • as a liberal i hate the idea of our party merging with the NDP. we are very very very different! don't forget that. francly, the NDP in power scares me almost as much as the harper dictatorship

  • @billy51020 So you think having another 200 mp's is going to result in a more efficient government. Right . you keep telling yourself that long enough and maybe you will believe it someday. The majority of countries with PR have nothing but a mess . Endless coalitions . Tons of mp's all rowing in a different direction floundering in their own innefficiency. Bickering and infighting. Give me a majority ( left or right ) and at least you will have a government that stands for something.

  • @The67rockstar Its not a matter of bigger or small govt but of one that is efficient. Don't ya think that if Party A gets 5 votes, party B gets 4, Party C gets 4, Party D gets 4, Party E gets 4, Party F gets 4 All those other votes get thrown out which is undemocratic as a representative is elected w/o a majority. Some MPs are elected with only around 30% of the vote. That means the majority voted against them. You could live in a riding where a majority did not vote 4 the ndp but they still won

  • @billy51020 This is Canada. Not Israel. I don't want bigger Government. With P.R. we would be stuck with about 20 new Green Part MP's. The only people who talk about P.R are the ones who don't win. First past the post has worked fine for this Country since 1867. You can thank the crook Jean Chretien for your current situation . Don't make the rest of the country suffer because of him. I am getting tired of people trying to change Canada.

  • @The67rockstar They have the prop. representation in Israel. Seems to work out fine. Most people in 2006 DID NOT KNOW there was a vote on electoral reform.

  • You Liberal/NDP no-class bunch of losers. Take your " proportional representation " and shove it. Canada voted against this crap system in 2006. You want to get back into power. WORK FOR IT !! Rebuild your party from the ground up.. There is no back door you sad sack bunch of commies You are all so lazy it makes me sick.

  • @worldolympics2010

To group the Liberals and NDP together, you will have to add the Conservatives in as well: yes, all three parties have in varying degrees accepted neoliberalism and no one will dare to abolish Capitalism.

Even on narrower issues, NDP and Liberals are not the same. Remember the PC before Chretien got in criticizing that the Liberal platform will cut too many social programmes. Of course, Liberals ended up winning and enforced Canada's most fiscally conservative program .

  • the NDP and Liberals are the same anyway. both socialist, both ruining canada. they should just join together. they have been working together for years anyway, it will only cut costs to tax payers by removing one party.
