Lime milk -obtained by mixing a small amount of quicklime (= burnt lime) with water- is kept in a closed ampoule. After a few hours the solid forms a sediment on the bottom. The transparent liquid above it is lime water. A drop of it can be used to test for CO2 in the air (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AL05KxwVuAE). By adding an indicator it can be demonstrated that it is an alkali: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4Jv65BEAnc.
