China-US competition extends to trade -- 13 August 2008

The United States and China are running neck and neck in the medal count at the Beijing Olympics, but China is quickly pulling ahead in their trade competition.

A new forecast predicts that China will overtake the US next year as the world's top producer of manufactured goods, as China's export surplus keeps surging.

Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman reports.

china and the US depend on each other. It is not just about producing cheap goods. China provides products on loan to the US. China buys US debts, so that the dollar value does not fall and the chinese workers don't go home without work. This is the main reason why the americans are able to maintain their standard of living, even though the US deficit is 700 billion dollars. The real problem for the americans would start, if the chinese prefer another market like EU and let the dollar fall.

Actually, if you think about it, it will require the Americans to be willing to work for dirt cheap AND pay higher price for the goods produced. Only then can you guarantee profit which is what globalization is all about.

Lol Americans don't "loose jobs" to any other country. This happens because they settle for cheaper goods produced at cheaper wages. If Americans were willing to work at lower wages or pay higher for goods produced locally, they wouldn't have this trouble.

I dun understand why China's being kinda stupid. The American currency isn't really reliable, not anymore it isn't at least and certainly it has a very questionable future. The Americans are getting tonnes of goods from China annually for almost nothing (USA can just keep printing bills because everyone want(s/ed) their currency).

The job losses are due to the US not utilizing PROTECTIVE TARIFFS, without tariffs corporations will always export manufacturing jobs to developing nations.
