*NOTE* I had to remove the audio from this video as it was in copyright violation. I decided to keep the video on anyway as the pics still show Johnny's love for June. Sorry for the missing audio.

Let me say I am surprised by all the "one is better than the other" comments regarding Gordon Lightfoot's original version of this song. It is not about which is better. They are both very different versions with different meanings and both can co-exist. Of course, Gordon Lightfoot's version is the best version because he wrote it. Johnny made it his own in this version and it was real and meaningful for him when he sang it. Johnny recorded this one not long before he died and he made it his own as he did with "Hurt".

Not sure if the song and pics go together, but when I hear him singing this, I can only imagine him singing it about his wife June who had passed away just before he recorded this. He had a knack of taking songs and making them his own and that's what he did with this one. I got the pictures off the web and, for me, they seemed to go with the song well.

  • you should have kept the video on your PC!! and watch it when you are bored ! not on you tube ..

  • @exorcist1701 - maybe you should find something else to do when you're bored besides posting useless comments on someone's video. Feel free to not watch it!

  • LOL... you must be talking to me, eh? I'm not screaming. Just making a point. Love the story of June and Johnny. Cash does Lightfoot's tune justice. But Cash's love for June does not go with the lyrics of Lightfoot's song. Video of Johnny and Vivian Liberto would have worked. He stopped loving her the day he met June.

By all means...do appreciate life without comment.

  • @VenusCapricorn

You're kind of making my point - he wouldn't have wasted his time singing about Vivian - he loved June and, in my opinion, he was singing this song with the emotion of having lost the love of his life, but wishing he could get her back. Also, in my opinion, you can't take the words he sings literally, you have to put them in the context of his emotional state. It's just my opinion, nobody else has to agree, so you can believe what you want and I'll continue thinking this.

  • This doesn't make any sense. You have one of the greatest love stories - Johnny & June, and you use this song? It doesnt work! The lyrics are about not wanting someone anymore, not about a couple in love with each other. Hell! If a guy was singing this song with me in mind I'd be walking out the door right after the lyric: ..."I don't know where we went wrong, but the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back." .....Glad the audio is off.

  • VenusCapricorn, you obviously don't know much about Johnny Cash if you think he could sing this song and not turn it into a love song. He was sad having just lost June before he recorded this. Yes, I know Gordo's version is about a relationship gone bad, but Johnny, as he often did, turned the song into something different and personal regardless of the actual lyrics. Obviously, I'm not the only person who thought the same when listening to Johnny's version. Same lyrics - very different songs.

  • @mikedev you can get audio back by appealing under fair use clause. they WILL allow it back

  • mikedev, I am not making any point for you at all. Johnny didn't sing this song with June in mind. How do you know he did? He liked the song. That's all. I guarantee you, he wouldn't use this song going with those pics of him and June. Of course, you can do whatever you want. And right, at this point in his life he wouldn't be wasting his time singing any tune for Vivian. But ***you*** chose to use this song and these pictures. Not Johnny.

  • @VenusCapricorn

    Word.

  • Well alot of hate, some things in life such as the Syn, the stars, even the stars at night Cash saw, captured, and shared to us all in song. Somrtimes technology is more than needes, and I love this video. I can add his voice from memory, I can simply watch and appreciate real life without an announcer, without comment. So to you screaming, you never really were a true cadh fan, want the real deal? Sorry, sucks to be you :)

  • Okay...did you see the movie? The script was approved by both June and Johnny before they died. No where in their time together or time separated [before they married] did they lose passion for each other - ESPECIALLY Johnny. The melody is so beautiful, lyrics haunting and heartbreaking; it's easy to mistake it for a love song. I believe Cash sang it cuz it's a GREAT the song - no doubt. Period. You cannot turn this song into a love song. Can't make the lyrics into a meaning they aren't.
