I'm afraid, its not a difference in opinion. Clearly not. Take note that Christopher Hitchens most certainly does not advocate "Two GLASSES of Scotch" in any part of the clip. That is an utter fabrication, a lie if you will.

Hey JQ, I've watched a couple of you videos now and you're a piece of shit.

listening an alcoholic promoting atheism is not good for any atheist, hopefully this idiot is dead now
-
Dope is usually used to refer to heroin or other substances that affect the DOPAMINE receptors, not weed you mindless fucktwat

More like a difference of a opinion than a lie. And its not about HIS alcohol consumption. Clearly he is honest about that, which is the point of the joke Maher makes. Labeling this video as you have is more dishonest than anything Hitchens says here ... good clip sans comentary though.

Oh touch screen technology, I beg your pardon, * what an insult

What an insults, all these videos are interrupted by your mindless drivel. Christopher Hitchens' contribution to this World doesn't deserve these lies and misleadingly cherry-picked lines and phrases.

@ZehGfather I never said I wanted to criminalize cannabis. I am very much opposed to the prohibition of any drugs at the federal level. The only drugs laws I support are local ordinances banning smoking in public places, driving under the influence and drunk/high & disorderly conduct. I really don't care if people use drugs in private, so long as it does not effect me. Personally I don't drink alcohol or do any drugs, legal or otherwise.

@TyphonUK Interesting! By casually consuming alcohol, pyscological effects (such as depression, anxiety, paranoia & severe memory loss/brain damage) can also be linked to alcohol. How fucking scientific is that?

@magister343 Alcohol can't produce second hand drinking, but in a way alcohol has certainly more deaths & violence to its name. The fact that (non-biological) cannabis & mainly tobacco is so harmful, is because of the fact off all the chemical crap we put in. Ever thought of people who didn't smoke anything in their lives & died from lung cancer? The air is filled with poison on purpose. Go ahead, just pop a bottle & criminalize cannabis, alcohol won't get any healthier for you.
"Any amount of any poison is bad for you"? That is nonsense. Everything is a poison at some dose, and several poisons have demonstrable hormesis that makes them healthy at low doses.
Two glasses of scotch a day is too much. Alcohol passes from being healthy to unhealthy at about a third of a glass of wine. You'd have ingested enough alcohol to kill you long before getting enough resveratrol to get most of its health benefits.
Smoking marijuana is worse than drinking, but eating it is not.

@magister343 I think Maher's point was just that we cannot separate the possible medicinal effects of alcohol from the psychological effects. In other words, it relieves stress - so we have no way of knowing if the statistics supporting alcohol benefits aren't simply the result of mellowing drinkers out. "We live in the country of great stress, so the guy who drinks lives a little longer than the guy whose like THIS [trembling with stress] and dies of a heartattack."

@JQisAwesome That makes sense if we rely on observational trials, but I believe that health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption have been demonstrated in clinical trials that do not rely on people consuming alcohol as part of a stress relieving ritual but would be given alcohol in a way that allows a control group to have an indistinguishable non-alcoholic alternative.

@magister343 If there was an "indistinguishable non-alcoholic alternative," that made you feel the same as alcohol, everybody would just drink that! We can never know if the beneficial effects of alcohol are psychological or purely medicinal. That's a common problem in science, separating mental effects from physical ones.
