Directing pedestrian traffic is a common thing when there is a big crowd. I have seen it happen after big sporting events in downtown areas. This, however, coincides with a march/protest.
Sometimes you have to walk the long way to your destination, but you won't have to do it with pushing and shoving.

I think in this case you were looking for trouble. BUT the cops are not pedestrian guards and should not have been there.

Cops are jackasses. I'm not surprised that they have no reason for you to not walk in the street. No doubt they were just given basic instruction, and when a situation comes along that they weren't coached about, they revert to a primal and angry state. Probably because they get confused when you ask them a question.
It makes perfect sense - the police had to make some kind of avenue so people coming from both directions would not interfere with the pro- life walk. Bloody hell, let the police do their jobs.
