normal running?race horses don't run normal.they run faster and harder than any horse galloping down some dirt road not even close. people are at the root of the problems. trained bucking bulls...what a laugh. all money. percentages are like averages one foot in fire one foot in ice average is good but one foot .....we are not stupid thanks
-
Nobodies ever looked at shin bucked? My childhood was on a Brahman ranch and we could be around them as they were very gentle and we learned animal behavior from my father and the cattle. Treat them wrong you get return force. Don't underestimate the good sense of the American Housewife.

Rodeo is bad becoming normal. Canon bones need to close or fuse, racers know that good ones ex-ray to be sure. If they run on bad tracks they will still breakdown. My degree in animal husbandry will not allow me to coddle rodeo and all it's PROMOTIONS. It's for money and check out the way they obey rules and how they shock them. Right now rodeo is stumbling and they need all the help they can get. I have a BS in animal science not a PHD but I did learn about genetics, management and training.

Bulls not on green grass will not get the greenies and if their diet and water intake is controlled it will even be less. Need to spend a little more time around the bulls to see how they are handled and fed prior to events not just time behind the chutes. Badly kept tracks break legs on race horses with jockeys. These wagon races need to ask, "why do we do this."
-
@Rowdybluetick : Amen.
-
@mayleenMD : for both of your argument, this is why she takes the approach of having to "qualify" these thoroughbreds to race, or bone diameter of the leg, etc. Also to be more selective in breeding, this is a classic case of survival of the fittest. As pelts upheld mentioned, it's their anatomy that is killing these horses, not the stampede. They could be snapping their legs running in the pasture.
Oh but wait, track-thoroughbreds don't ever get turned out, BECAUSE they may break. See how this
-
Maybe all the people that are against wagon racing will be lucky enough to have their employer sponsor a driver at the stampede and they can give their head a shake, put on their leather stiletto boots and the rest of their lammles outfit and come get in the way at the barns and learn what really goes on with these athletes.
Temple haters? seriously... open your eyes and do some more research she is great.

There are over a 1000 horses on a circuit… If you had a 1000 horses in a beautiful meadow with a stream trickling through while the sun shines through white fluffy clouds you would have horse deaths… Colic, broken legs you name it, they are animals stuff happens. Shouldn’t we be glad they aren’t turned into to glue right after their short track career? How bout stop the wealthy Calgarians that own yet never see their “race horse” from breeding their not so great stock every year.
-
I have worked for and around various wagon outfits and its unreal how well these horses are taken care of. I have been in 4-H, pony club, equine college and all around and haven’t seen any horses treated better than these athletes.
-
Spruceview - TB’s at other events are ones that made the cut for the track the 1st time or are sound and have moved onto a different discipline… 2nd hand stuff may have more ‘break downs’ but nobody threw them out early....
It would be a mistake to underestimate this woman and her knowledge of animal welfare. Temple Grandin is a remarkable woman that speaks with experience as well as honesty. I really wish PETA and other animal rights groups would listen to her message and quit blinding themselves from their egoistic views. I've volunteered at the grounds and I know how well these animals are cared for. A death of a horse is not taken lightly by anyone.

wow, the first sensible thing I've heard..I was raised on a cattle ranch and listen for the lunatic fringe but she actually makes sense. I agree with the Stampede and Chuckwagon association to put pressure on the thoroughbred associations for appropriate breeding....
