MayDay in Lanreath; a time when the whole village turned out to enjoy the community events that took place during the day, joined by visitors from far and wide. Maypole dancing was centre to the activities, which goes back a few decades. In the past, the men of the village used to select and cut the tallest tree they could find for the maypole, irrespective of who it belongs to, and defended it with 12-bore shot-guns from rival villages who tried to steal it. Lanreath still holds the record for the tallest maypole, but the police put a stop to rivalry of the past.
If you missed it this year, join us next year, and enjoy.
