Music by Martin Galway (for Commodore 64 game Rambo: First Blood Part II, 1986)

Quote from wikipedia:

The reactor accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, resulting in a severe nuclear meltdown. On 26 April 1986 at 01:23:40 a.m. reactor number four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant located in the Soviet Union near Pripyat in Ukraine exploded. Further explosions and the resulting fire sent a plume of highly radioactive fallout into the atmosphere and over an extensive geographical area.

The plume drifted over parts of the western Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Northern Europe, and eastern North America. Large areas in Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia were badly contaminated, resulting in the evacuation and resettlement of over 336,000 people. According to official post-Soviet data, about 60% of the radioactive fallout landed in Belarus.

The 2005 report prepared by the Chernobyl Forum, led by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and World Health Organization (WHO), attributed 56 direct deaths (47 accident workers, and nine children with thyroid cancer), and estimated that there may be 4,000 extra deaths due to cancer among the approximately 6.6 million most highly exposed. Specifically, the report cited 4,000 thyroid cancer cases among children diagnosed by 2002.

Although the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and certain limited areas will remain off limits, the majority of affected areas are now considered safe for settlement and economic activity.

  • I have to say this again, this montage is awesome. You couldn't find music more appropriate to accompany these eerie pictures.

I want to go to Pripyat next summer. I think I might go through Kiev on the way to Moscow.

  • The design of the Chernobyl power plant, and many others nuclear power plants in former UdSSR where known to be unstable, this was a calculated risk. The reactor used graphite rods to moderate the reaction and light water (ordinary H2O "tap water") as coolant. Biggest benefit of this design is that it allows for the use of crude natural uranium as fuel (no need for enriched uranium). But the design is also notoriously unstable at low effect.

    Look up "RBMK".

  • Pretty impressive pictures and pretty clever tune to use for it - although seeing where it comes does not help to make it feel more fitting ;-) (Thank goodness I never played Rambo that much on my C64, so I am not prejudiced against the music :-) )
