The real cost of Linux comes when something doesn't work and you need assistance. A.K.A. machine downtime, hardware compatibility, expensive support system, and zero security updates for older version.
@peppeddu I didn't say free I said freedom << "open source" But yes most Linux distribution are free in price as well... Windows ,and Mac both have Zero security updates for older versions... Try getting new updates for Windows 98 "There isn't any new updates" Zero ... and you paid money for it.
With Microsoft, Oracle, etc. you know, before you buy, when the product won't be supported anymore. With open source there is not such thing, you have to rely on someone willing to help you or pay 50+$ per hour for support.
From a purely financial point of view, to me it's way cheaper to use a paid OS, and I can use the extra time/money to do things I enjoy the most. To me, that's what I call freedom.
You do understand that many big name companies use Linux, and BSD right ? and they make money off of it... and that Mac OS core is Darwin that has a lot of BSD code in it. So the core of all Apple software is open source... so if you have an Ipod ,Ipad, Iphone, Mac book you are using open source . :\
I agree, even Microsoft uses open source, all the TCP/IP stack has been lifted from BSD.
My point is another though: Many people confuse free with freedom.
To me the most important thing is installation time and machine uptime. If I have to spend days to install, let's say, tribxox, buy dedicated hardware and finding 0 help when that thing trows me an error, I say no thanks
I stick the Office Communicator CD in the drive and I'm done. Sure I pay but it's a ten years uptime with minimum hassle
On another note do a search on youtube for the "Linux ELSE smartphone" I'm not sure you have seen it, but it's very nice look Phone... Take a look if you get some time.

To me this isn't free it's bait-and-switch.
