Major Pottratz discusses EOD robots in use today. TALON EOD robots were the first military robots taken into Afghanistan during action against the Taliban and Osama bin Laden in February 2002. They initially accompanied the Special Forces on a Classified mission, and are still there now doing EOD work. Light enough to be deployed by a single person, the rugged iRobot PackBot can lift up to 15 pounds and travel up to 5 miles per hour. With its interchangeable, modular payload capabilities, this robot quickly adapts to a variety of missions for warfighters and first responders. With rising demand for remote robotic response to increasingly complex threat situations, the Vanguard MK2 is designed for preparedness, response and handling of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) threats.

  • @ld871111 The E.O.D. Robots dont defuse the I.E.D's etc.

  • @thuderbay iran doesnt have better anything. They better shut thier rhetoric

  • @ld871111 for ied they can use the robot because it can lift the explosief up go to a safe location put c4 on it and it will explode its also used for observation or searching like vehicles and other things so when they detect a bom they will also know what type of bomb it is, mostly when you see a person with a bomb suit its probably for demining because it dont work for a mine. ;-)

  • I touched the Pacbot, the one by IROBOT, yea the screen and the controls look cool, I want to go EOD one day maybe, yea stationed in Fort Drum now, EOD teams got my respect

  • @ld871111: there are many and various reasons, and you pretty much summed it up by there are limitations on what the robot can do

  • Iran has got far better ones.

  • Because all of your equipment is made by the lowest bidder

  • it probably may malfunction like any other machine and then they have to use the suit

  • Anybody know why the EOD guys still get in a bomb suit and defuse IED in Iraq and A-stan by hand when robot is available?

I mean there's got to be some limitation to the use of robot. Otherwise they wouldn't have to get their hands dirty and put their lives at risk.

  • most of the specs and capabilities of the robots are most likely classified, he didn't answer the question because he didn't know the answer, but because he was not allowed.

next time think a little more, and you wont find someone like me calling you an idiot
