"The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde

A 1985 TV broadcast featuring the formidable and hilarious Lady Bracknell by Dame Wendy Hiller.

Gary Bond ... John Worthing, JP
Jeremy Clyde ... Algernon Moncrieff
Alan Hay ... Lane
Gabrielle Drake ... Gwendolen Fairfax

Directed by Michael Attenborough (stage) and Michael Lindsay-Hogg (TV)

Richard Ross asked Wilde about 'Earnest' "What sort of play are we to expect?"

the playwright answered: "It is exquisitely trivial, a delicate bubble of fancy, and it has its philosophy."

"Its philosophy?"

"That we should treat all the trivial things of life seriously, and all the serious things of life with sincere and studied triviality."

This production was broadcasted on US television in 1985 (when I recorded in on this VHS tape), and that is the date given in several references, but it was originally produced in 1981.

  • @sugoiheart Meaning hes going to kill the other person hes trying to be in the country I suppose

  • I'm doing a play of the this movie and I'm trying for the part of Lady Bracknell. I'm a sophmore and it's my first play ever ahhh. (gotta start working on my accent) lol.

  • @sugoiheart If Gwendolen accepts him, "Jack" will stop pretending to be someone else. Therefore he has to "kill" his fictive "brother".

  • "if Guandelin accepts me i'm goin to kill my brother"

what does he mean by that, anyone?

  • @AsbjornOlling The teachers are secret stoners. A contemporary type of Bunburying....

  • Far be it from me suggest Dame Wendy needed to tone it down for this television production, but it isn't the easiest thing to do to listen to her playing to the rafters, vocally.Of course she's a giant (or giantess) of the stage, but here she gives every line way too much, I don't know...oomph, too much sauce (for lack of better terms), as if she were trying out for the role rather than it having already been awarded her and the cameras rolling. That said, thanks, of course, for posting.

  • Every once in a while a high school teacher comes by these videos, and is completely shocked by all of the stoners.

  • fuck no more fucking cucumbers

  • @Issun9000 Read, or watch, the whole story then you'll understand why that musn't happen.
