It took us four days to learn how to live. From the first day to the fourth day, we went to SM Megamall Supermarket to immerse ourselves with reality by being Sales Associates (A fancy name that simply means people who put groceries in the bag, tie heavy boxes filled with goods, clean and remove hair from supermarket cart wheels, return stray items back to their shelves, scrub the shelves, and lots more.)
To make the experience more memorable and more meaningful, my friends and I took the challenge, and that is to personally experience the urban jungle of Manila from MRT rides akin to Sardines packed in a small can to Jeepney trips exposed to the heat and pollution. It was a journey like no other; instead of riding comfortable air-conditioned cars, we walked the ever-peaceful MMDA overpasses, and instead of listening to music with our iPods, we were able to listen to the voice of the industrious city day and night.
Ever since I was a little kid, I would look outside through the window of my car and ask myself, "When will I ever walk those streets freely and be connected with the real world?" Well, I just did. My own shoes walked the path an average Filipino would take from his house to work in the morning and from work back home at night. In a span of four days, I have seen the real life out there. The experience might have ended, but a whole new world is just opening up to me.
