The Spiritual Dimension Of Health (46)
If we think of health care as merely treatment and surgery, we run the risk of substance abuse because of our narrow view. Treatment and surgery, besides being costly, represent only the second line of defense against illness. There is a much better way to maintain good health using the first line of defense.
The first line of defense is a healthy lifestyle and prevention. This is the non-material aspect I call the spiritual dimension. It covers the right philosophy, attitude, responsibility, and education. Health care is about the pursuit of happiness through self-help and self-empowerment. If possible, health care also means helping and empowering other people.
Philosophy
May I remind you that good life means good health, peace of mind, love, and money in that order. The good things in your possession all lie within, not without. Have you realized that the most blessed people are not necessarily the rich?
Attitude
Once you have the right philosophy, your attitude will change accordingly. I wish to remind you of the following:
• Do everything in moderation.
• Take care of yourself so that others dont have to take care of you.
• Stay close to nature or something natural.
• Simplify your life to bring calm and reduce stress.
• Re-think and re-organize your life if things dont go well.
• Be generous and help other people.
• Don't worry about dreadful diseases. If it is your time to check out, even the best experts cannot save you.
Responsibility
Good health starts and ends with personal responsibility because it is your own life that is at stake. Being responsible is a habit and a way of life that everyone should cultivate. Otherwise you will do damage to yourself and become a burden to society.
Responsibility brings fulfillment and happiness. Do you feel good when you can achieve something on your own without relying on others?
Education
Health maintenance does not have to be sophisticated, scientific or mechanical. Good health is about common sense, and simple and enjoyable practices. Let me remind you of the following:
• Eat more quality, not quantity. You are what you eat.
• Eat a variety of food. The more the variety, the better the nutrition.
• Walk an hour everyday as a minimum exercise.
• Your body begins to go downhill after age 50, earlier for some and later for others. You should accept this fact and tailor your activities accordingly.
• Do not follow a complicated procedure for good health. It may bring negative effects by increasing your stress.
• Good health does not mean free from illness. It means less severe illness and faster recovery.
• Your body can do amazing things if you try to cultivate. They include: learning, habit forming, self-strengthening, immunity, robustness, self-healing, fast recovery, alertness, etc.
• Don't get paranoid about minor illness. Most illnesses are temporary with some inherent discomforts. People dont die that easily because of minor ailments. If you do, that means your time is up. Why worry?
