If labor unions killed jobs, factories would be moving to the so-called "right to work" states rather than overseas. Germany and Japan have stronger unions than the U.S. while retaining a strong industrial base.
We need the Employee Free Choice Act, new trade policies that protect American jobs and single payer health care. Restoring a balance between labor and management will help the middle class.

rightdemocrat- I agree that Japanese trade unions are highly effective, but that effectiveness stems from their sensitivity to the economic situation and close relationship with corporations, unlike the stifling, politically oriented unions like the UAW.
Perhaps unions work better with management in Japan because the companies are run in more responsible manner and think more long term. The CEO's in Japan are well-compensated but not at an absurd level like in the U.S.
