Recent heavy rains over much of southern Australia have brought back new life into the Barmah Forest after years of drought.

This Black Snake was found in early spring out looking for a meal or a mate. For the first time in many years there should be plenty of food in the form of frogs, the main diet of these snakes, although they will take just about anything they can catch.

If there is one snake the average Australian can identify it's this one, it's even immortalised in a type of beer.

  • Crikey mate, just jam your thumb up it's butthole, that'll get him flammin angry!

  • @UltimateFighting666 think I'l leave that one to the Hopaote and the footballers

  • Whats cool is that red bellies are an elapid, same family as cobras!

  • @pbrskater26 True: They can flatten their necks out when they fell threatened as well , although not quite to the same extent as a cobra can.

All venomous land snakes in Australia are elapids.

  • I am so excited! I am taking delivery of a pair of Red Bellies on Thursday! I can't wait!

Great video. RBB's are a magnificent species.

  • @SaveTheSnakes

Lucky you....they really are great snakes and quite placid...but be careful when feeding them...they can get pretty excited!

  • @pseudechis Indeed. I have seen Red Bellies in action when it comes to food. they are quite the pigs of the snake world.
