@Stevedup hi. i come from azores but living in france.in fact, its not poisonous when they're dead but it changes the flavour.means its grosse to eat dead.
Does anybody know why lapas are eaten alive? My wife is of Portuguese descent, and her relatives told her that if a person eats lapas when they (the lapas) are dead, their bodies become poisonous. Is this a scientific fact, or a Portuguese urban legend?
These are NOT mussels. They are limpets. They are no more related to mussels than you are to a horse.

@bisnagaboy You will not regret it. I use to eat them as a boy in the Azores, and to this day 35yrs later still miss that flavor. CHEERS!!!
