Here Tony Thomas teaches a simple method of playing old time banjo. Thomas refers to this method as the 123 technique. This enables the beginner to learn a very simple yet old time style of playing the five string. Many old time musicians still use this technique today. This method gets the beginner started to where they can advance later.Oh Suzanna taught by Tony Thomas.

  • how do I tune a longneck banjo to G tuning?

  • @asongsinger you either tune the banjo in D or the best way I find, is to capo the 5th fret then use the standard tuning , that will work well on the long neck banjo, good luck.....Tony

  • Hi Tony, that was great. Well played and well explained - really encouraging!

You mentioned a "Kentucky drop thumb" method of strumming, any chance you might find the time to show us how that works?

    Thank you.

  • @bonnieville100

I'm glad you liked my video --I will explain more about the style and strumming on my next video --regards, Tony

  • Wow, Tony, you made that seem easier than the books I've read. I believe I could do it. I don't have banjo, but maybe someday I will, and I hope you do a series of more of these lessons. This was good.

  • THANK YOU I WILL ADD MORE LATER

  • Tony sure love that cat and clock chrime

  • Tony, sure

  • One of my students is working full time, AND has some medical problems. So, I told him to learn from YOUR series, right now, at home, whenever he has a few minutes. Sure beats finding time to travel across town and arrive here at a specific moment when I'm not busy, either.

  • Just bought My First Banjo, have No idea how to play it but & Your Videos are The BEST, I'm confident with your help I will learn how to play....thanks So Much.

  • Thank you.

  • did you notice that you whistle while you speak a word with an "s" in it? :D

  • its 4'oclock

  • I tried a banjo teacher on youtube before you, and just like you said - I ended up feeling frustrated and discouraged. This was my first lesson on the banjo, as a complete novice, and I came away it having learned what frets are, the Open G, C, & D.

I'm not in a hurry, if I'm to learn this properly - I need to learn just little bits at a time .. that helps the most - and when I get those right, I'm then ready to learn a little more. Thank you for being a patient & kind teacher in this video!
