Comments With Dr. James Haney Presents*Freedom Rides South, with RPatton,a student at Tennessee State University, and participant in the Freedom Rides, South, Part 1 of 3This video has Enhanced Text (et)*drjhaney
Rev. Thomas is convinced that the black church is still the vehicle through which blacks are made aware of the issues facing them in society. "We believe that you cannot preach on earth and live in Heaven. You have to do it all down here."
To those who believe that the black church should refrain from political involvement, Rev. Thomas counters: "I feel sorry for them. What do they mean? Elijah, the prophet, talked to the King. David became King - it was a political thing. Judah accepted David. Israel came later and joined David.
"I don't know what they are talking about when they say we shouldn't be involved in politics. I pay taxes, the church pays taxes on the janitor. We pay taxes on the piano. I don't know what they are talking about. I believe that the politicians don't want us to talk, they want us to be quiet. You can't shut up a prophet."
Rev. Thomas says that blacks" would still be riding in the back of the bus had not the church had enough guts to speak out."
In order to bring conventioneers to the inner city, the Tennessee Convention organized a feast and festival for members of the convention on Jefferson Street at the end of the conference. There were trolleys running up and down Jefferson Street as a result of the efforts to work with Jefferson Street merchants.

This video helped get a better image of what and how the freedom rides were held and taken place. I honestly think that I would have not been as strong or 'man" enough to even take that place.Marquita A.MWF 11:30-12:25

In this first video Rip Patton was introduced. He was also a native from Nashville, TN. In the civil rights era in the 50's and 60's the participated in the sit in's. He talks about what it was like to participate in an actual sit in and by the grace of God he was in individual who did not get arrested during this period. Before it got out of hand with the violence the sit in's came to an end because they didn't want a lot of commotion to start and end up the cause of death.C.Burns MWF9:10-10:05

The guest of this video, Mr. Patton, was born and raised in Nashville, TN and he attended Tennessee state university and majored in music. He was one of the participants in Freedom Ride which did not get arrested. On mother's day on may 14th of 1961, freedom riders rode in interstate buses in order to test the U.S. supreme court decision Boynton but they were arrested for trespassing and violating state and local Jim Crow laws.
