Some reason I haven't seen any scenes from this movie here so I've added a few. This Scene in Quantum of Solace is where Mathis(Giancarlo Giannini) tragicaly dies. To me the most sad scene I've seen in a movie. I cried when I first seen this. (C) Marc Forster, director (C) Ian Fleming, Author

  • A very powerfull scene however I thought that when he threw Mathis in the bin was a little silly.

  • That scene made me very angry, of course I loved Mathis

  • even though he says Mathis wouldn't have cared about being thrown in the trash, that part made me wanna cry the first time i saw it.

  • Yes, it was sad. Giancarlo Giannini's such a splendid actor, it's a shame they wrote him off. Their next bond movies just won't be the same

  • If "Rene Mathis" is a cover name, does that mean "James Bond" is also a cover name?

  • The reason that Bond threw him in the trash bin, took his money, and made the remark "He wouldn't care," goes way back to a conversation that Bond and Mathis had in Montenegro. Mathis stashed the bodies of the African guys Bond killed in the trunk of Le Chifres henchmans car. Mathis then called the mobile of one of the dead men while the cops were searching the car, and the henchman was arrested. Mathis remarked "Being dead doesn't mean one can't still be helpful!" Hence why he wouldn't care.

  • Talk about dumping your friends!

  • @Ironbee07 The Police would Kill Bond, Or arrest him than he'd be in trouble. You can also say Bond wanted to avenge Matthis.

  • Anyway i strongly believe Bond will never forget him. That, and that he died beside a good friend, might have been good enough for Mathis.

I think that would be good enough for me as well.

  • I think what Mathis said was; "Dont leave me like this James, i´d rather die here on the spot". And then James thaught; Well at least you re going to some other place. And no, Bond did´nt kill the police officers, but he should have just put a bullit in Mathis head, and get it over with. In another way the last things that Mathis said about Vesper, was important for the film, and this is just a suggestion but I think that Bond will think about Vesper, even in the 23rd...

  • @redandrew16 No, I don't think DAD was a masterpiece at all. In my opinion Casino Royale was one of the great contribution to mankind. Because in that Vesper's suicide or the romantic scenes were really powerful, had a background. In QoS the script is awful as hell, has many holes in it (a friend of mine asked once: Why does Bond kill policemen? - Because the police chief betrayed Mathis.) It's alright, but has no relevance nor the intensity.

  • @Ironbee07

"Sigh" you probably thought that the movie "Die Another Day" was the greatest contribution to mankind. Symbolism is key to movies, in some ways it is subtle and it other ways it is not but I thought that if you changed this scene it would just detract from the power it holds.

  • I am not normally given to symbolism but with this scene I will make an exception just because I enjoy the movie so.

  • I started to cry when i saw him die and i didn't feel comfortable looking James throwing him in the trash. Poor Mathis loved him.
