India raises concern over China dam on Brahmaputra

India on Thursday expressed concern over reports that China was building a dam on its side of the Brahmaputra river, saying it would verify the matter. The statement came amid reports that China had begun work in April on a hydroelectric project on the Yarlong Tsangpo river, the name the Brahmaputra is known by Tibetans. The project was inaugurated on March 16 and the first cement poured on April 12. The project would require the construction of a reservoir, which could mean diversion of water.
