His character was typical of the time. No, it wasn't a good time for blacks, but then again we can't deny it existed; that would be a lie. Yes, Hoke was humble and pliant, but he was also patient and compassionate towards a proud woman who was facing losing her independence. I can understand that watching the film would make you uncomfortable. But you should also understand that it was Hoke's kindness and humour that won Miss Daisy over. Also, there were moments when he did stand tall.
