So I'm sitting on the couch, and I hear a snap. I see out my front window a giant tree falling down. In just those few seconds, I think in my head, Is there a storm I don't know about, why is this tree falling, is part of that tree going to come crashing through the window and the roof where my children and me are sitting? It destroyed both of our cars, but we were all OK.
That is not much of a root ball for a tree that size. Did you have a root crown excavation and inspection done on the remaining trees? Out here in California the oaks are adapted to really dry summers so watering lawns around the oaks can cause the roots to rot. That might be a factor. The roots could have also been damaged by heavy equipment when the house was built. If you still have big trees near the house you should find yourself an arborist (not a logger) to do a hazard evaluation.
