Update: For all the "lololol it's not a fair fight" comments:

No, of course is isn't. I wouldn't try and compare the two on a like for like basis. What I was attempting to do here was find out if the Pogo Stylus combined with an iPod (which at the time was all that was out) worked well enough to warrant splashing the cash out on an iPad for sketching with. For what it's worth, the Pogo Stylus is not bad, but it's over-priced for what it is. Just have a look around Youtube for the video that shows you how to make one with steel wool. Buy a Pogo, and when the foam goes south (which it will), rip it out and use the #0000 steel wool. It's soft, and if you have a screen cover it won't scratch the surface.

Will I get an iPad? When it goes to 2nd gen I probably will if it has the new 'retina display' but I've learnt in the past that early adoption is rarely the way to go with Apple.

For those getting all bent out of shape about my comparison, I've changed the title.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the interests of research, I decided to compare drawing on an iPod Touch with a Pogo Stylus Vs drawing the same image on a Cintiq. Who won? No contest really, of course it's the Cintiq... but what I was more interested in was trying to find out if the iPad will be a viable digital sketch tool. I remain unconvinced.

  • So you're saying the ipod is no good for doing digital artwork? The only thing I see different (between the Cintiq and ipod) is the sensitivity in the brush control. You don't think the ipod can be adjusted for thick and thin strokes? That would be my biggest concern. Anyone?............I've used the Cintiq in the past, but can't afford one now that I'm laid off. The ipad looks like a good alternative. feedback please..............

  • @rob9232 Feedback? I've been replying to everyone as best I can. I'm not saying the iPod is no good (although it is pretty small), what I was attempting to do (bearing in mind this was before the iPad came out) was gauge how well the Pogo stylus worked, and if it was good ...(it was ok, nothing special) then the iPad might be worth the cash.

I can't afford to just blow the best part of £500 on something if I'm not sure of it either.

  • Hey man can you tell me your brush settings?I've been trying to get a brush with smooth lines and control like that

  • @Suzizan Hi, the brush settings for Sketchbook Pro are posted on twitpic here:

twitpic/2ilsre (I had to remove the dot com as it errors and there isn't enough room to post it all as text.

If you mean the iPod, I just used the standard pencil / brush tool from Sketchbook Pro Mobile.

  • I saw the name of this video and I was like... seriously...

  • @MrVincentGoldman Yeh, a lot of people think I wasted my breath here. But my intention was to test the Pogo more than the iPod (and to find out if an iPad may be useful as a sketch tool). Perhaps the video is a bit mis-titled. ;)

As I said further down, I did say it wasn't a fair fight. A lot of digital artists seem to be finding the iPad ideal for laptop sketching and until Wacom bring out their own OS (can't see that happening) they'll never be any good for portable on-the-go work

  • @chubzzy15 At a guess I'd say the laws of probability would say that there a few million people who could. I won't lose any sleep over it. ;)

  • This is beautiful

  • Its fun to doodle on the iPad just like it is on a sketch book only this sketch book is worth an arm and leg but of course you get what you pay for.

  • I've tried the sketch and PoGo and all the others and they're All a waste of money compared to the STYLUS-R-US stylus. Stylus-R-Us stylus don'[t require any pressure at all and they have like 4 telescoping styluys that are awesome. I have the Entrepreneur and the New Jersey and OMG are they ever the coolest accessory you can get for the iPad. They're perfect for drawing and really great for note taking. Just Google Stylus-R-Us to find them.

  • @rob9232 the sensivility is a looot of important, not in this picture but i can´t sketch without it

  • you can't compare an IPod Vs 2048 Pressure levels.

    That's unfair! LOL

  • which cintiq?

  • i have to admit the ipod one looks better end result but the cintiq is cleaner... yeah

  • @tjhwwweee Sorry I missed this. The program is Sketchbook Pro Mobile.

  • lol there's no comparison but nice video anyway haha

  • i like the ipod one better...

  • what was the program you used to draw the ipod drawing????

  • You gave her a ushanka lol. Right side is better, minus the hair

  • awsome :]

  • @NinjaBeaverStudios

It's true that there are "better" artists, but there are better people at everything. "Better" art is in the eye of the beholder. :p In my opinion I think the way you draw is gawwwgeeouuss. Chubzz is a poohead. >:p

  • @NinjaBeaverStudios Useful info, thanxs. Im getting ipod Its the same

I meant just using mail or apps, I was talking of full draws, full illustrations every day. That why im asking about size of the sketckbook files.

  • @phonzie I only have an 8GB, but then I don't use it for much other than apps and music. If you've got the cash to spare I would think an iPad would be a better bet. I don't know how much the disk space affects performance, but as you can email the images to your Mac or PC it doesn't matter too much how much space you have. I wouldn't quote me on that though.

Canvas size is 1024x682 on 3GS iphone and 3rd gen iPod Touch.

  • i could do better
