A selection of photographs, taken by me, of the Maltese capital, Valetta.
There were many wonderful sites to discover. The city - although small, with a population of around six thousand - is crammed with some of the most amazing Baroque architecture; so much so that in 1980 it was officially recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (amongst the likes of Florence, St Petersburg and Durham). The city was named for Jean Parisot de la Valette, who succeeded in defending the island from an Ottoman invasion in 1565. Valette was a senior figure in the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem - a long-standing religious/military order which resided in Malta for over two hundred years from the sixteenth century until Napoleon's brief occupation. The Order was mainly responsible for the city's fine architecture. The British Prime minister, Benjamin Disraeli, said of the cityscape as "a city of palaces built by gentlemen for gentlemen," and remarked that "Valletta equals in its noble architecture, if it does not excel, any capital in Europe."
