Not sure of where you get your info. The Howard Jones teams were called the Thundering Herd in the 1920's due to the way they ran over other teams. This was because of the NCAA rules on passing back in the day. Marshall was called the Boogercats until 1958 when their student body voted for Big Green. They didn't change to the Thundering Herd until 1965 when the admin decided Big Green didn't mean anything. They are named after an f'ing cow. Sc was called Herd because they were bad assed.
