Never was a railtour more aptly named, as Tyseley's 'Castle' no.5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' puts in a stunning performance over the Settle and Carlisle. The tour started at Tyseley with 'The Earl' taking over at Hellifield after an early morning amble from Carnforth. The video opens with the loco and support coach heading north on Friday after noon at Winwick followed by scenes at Hellifield prior to departure. The action proper commences at Blea Moor on the outward journey and then Birkett Common and Whalley on the return.
Thanks to all involved with the locomotive at Tyseley and to the crews for such a great performance.
Great to see fellow YouTubers Steam1989, GreatWestern175 today and I'm glad their visit up north was accompanied by some decent weather. Also good to see Steve Thompson, Chris Taylor (Khankadet) Mike, (Rab4472) and Phil (981smithy) out and about.
Although my title page, prepared on the Friday, shows the steam leg ending at Crewe, in fact the loco stayed on the train returning to Tyseley via Birmingham New Street, with the diesel in front

  • She is certainly one loud engine. Apologies for any distortion, purely down to 5043 as I hadn't adjusted the microphone settings at all from what I normally use!

Hi Trevor - yes 5043 looks stunning. Two ex Tyseley firemen I know have told me that the restoration is as good as it gets. As good as,if not better, than Swindon turned them out. Looking forward to my all time favourite western engine making a come back though - Clun Castle. Cheers.

  • I had heard that sad news elsewhere, must be very frustating for you all.
