This is the finale of the dreaded Swiss "Vollabnahme", or complete, vehicle inspection, in Zurich. The inspector test drives my 38 year old 109" six cylinder station wagon on a closed course, locking the brakes up twice, at 30km/h and at 60 km/h, and then tests the parking brake on a hill. Kind of a ridiculous test for an old Landy, which you wouldn't drive like a normal car anyway. If you look carefully you'll glimpse the little A.S.A. roadster that was being tested at the same time on the course, a baby Ferrari.

An hour of prodding, measuring, jiggling, shaking, weighing, circuit testing, and white-glove inspection preceeded the driving test.

And guess what, it passed!

  • Question: you use the 7.50R16 Michelin XZY tyres?? Perfect for leaf springs, longer story. 1st set did 165k km, since few yrs returned to XZY (tubeless, can be with tube: but this initiates flats!) and Nokian 235/85R16 TLess Hakkapalita for winter, with last winter nice touch of snow in Sweden.. In garage 4 tube rims, 4spiked, 2winter spare, 2 XZLspare, Ha you could come and get a few for free. On LR 2 spare (rear & course on bonnet! : Stationwagon: +bonnet wheel: not side wind sensitive.

  • Hi,

New michelin xpc 7.5R16, you get them cheap from Defender owners getting alloy rims. It's 12V. That's an oil pressure gauge (not temp). We had an army jeep when I grew up, lots of fun. ironically I now have another L-head engine! Sounds similar.

  • What a Beautiful sound the straight six engine makes! Sounds Excellently Healthy. Gearbox etc sounds also excellent! Many Enjoyable Miles wished for you! (mine is "only"25 now, 1st series 110 build, 1983, 1st owner also; I grew up in Series 1, 2, 2a abroad: the centre dashboard should never have been abandoned! Greetings from Holland

  • Thanks. It has 57,000 km. During the parking brake test you can hear an intermittent valve clicking, and the idle revs are too high. This summer the vacuum advance and the Stromberg diaphragm failed! I have an SIII sixpot with only 18,000km. Now, that sounds great! Haven't had time to make a video of it, check back sometime in case I do. Take care of your old Defender.

  • Hi again, 57k only: straight 6 likely to do another multiple of this! Dash-left: you have the 3 gauge one: water & oil temp & fuel gauge: 24V? I LIKE THIS DASH! Hm: no indiv wiper motors. Ah, when in Argentina, Viedma, my father took me in his 2a 300-400km single trip over pampa to oil drilling rig.. Thanks f take care wish. Hm, mine is a '110' strictly spoken, tacho reads 538000km, 185k with V8 (now retired in friends MG Cabrio V8) and since 1994 200Tdi official LRkit now 350k km done
