Video of the Orwell Prize's first event at The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival 2011, 'Victorian Values', held in Montpellier Gardens on Saturday 15th October 2011. Jose Harris (social historian, Emeritus Professor of Modern History, University of Oxford), Owen Jones (author of 'Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class') and Shiv Malik (journalist, author of 'Jilted Generation: How Britain Bankrupted Its Youth') discuss the return of the Victorian-era distinction between the "undeserving" and "deserving" poor to debates about poverty. Chaired by Julia Wheeler, and introduced by Jean Seaton (director of the Prize).
