On May 22, 2009 a pygmy killer whale (Feresa attenuata) that had been in the area since May 1, 2009 had beached itself earlier near Maalaea Harbor. People on the beach pushed the creature back into the water not realizing they were interfering with nature's plan. The animal was disoriented and highly agitated and was swimming erratically in the surf off the breakwall at Maalaea Harbor.
NOAA personnel made a decision to capture the whale and assess its situation. Everything suggested that the creature had some serious problems. This was confirmed when blood work and other studies were performed.
There is very little information in the literature regarding the circumstances surrounding strandings of Pygmy Killer Whales. If sighted they are usually seen in water over 500 meters deep. A great deal of information was learned about this species from this stranding. More details to follow. Check out DrLeisure.com for additional information.
