Fossil Fuel Follies (frolick)

The villain in Fossil Fuel Follies represents the unscrupulous fossil fuel industries (oil & coal) who have intentionally and successfully mislead the public on climate change. By funding climate sceptics to promote the science as inconclusive, they have succeeded in stalling a response to the problem.

As we show in the video clip, their motive is protection of their own industries. Over the last twenty years, the competitor, climate-friendly green energy in all its many forms, has been elbowed out, receiving little government/investment incentives. In Australia, our clean energy pioneers have been forced offshore to do business.

The lavish lobbying budgets of the rich and powerful fossil fuel industries curry government favour and influence policy making.

A quote from George Monbiots book Heat sums up the strategy. It was written by a Republican political consultant early in George W Bushs presidency.

"Should the public come to believe that the scientific issues are settled, their views about global warning will change accordingly. Therefore, you need to continue to make the lack of scientific certainty a primary issue in the debate."

Fossil Fuel Follies is a response to the lack of ethics informing these powerful groups. Ironically, the future needs to be saved for them as much as it does for everyone else. My wish is that they will come on board and contribute to climate solutions in a meaningful and immediate way, such as rallying behind clean energy and soil carbon sequestration. Otherwise they, along with us, have everything to lose.

We are faced with a planet on the brink of collapse and we are not ready. The crisis calls for a degree of initiative, genius, courage and innovation unmatched in human history.

Synopsis of play:
Whats happened to all the clean energy? When Doctor and Nurse go
to operate on ailing Earth, they find the first aid kit is empty. Despite the fact that renewables could meet all of Australias energy needs and stimulate regional economies Could the villain, Mr. Greedy, be responsible? As he spins on clean coal and nuclear, nurse and the Renewables outsmart the villain and save the day.

There was a very interesting programme on BBC4 last night - which is now available to watch on BBC IPlayer - called: Meet The Climate Sceptics. There minions are out today in force slagging off the BBC and the film-maker accusing them of a stitchup - see Daily Telegraph, for example. What I would like to know is how, and who, got hold of the infamous email. Smacks of a conspiracy to me by the powers-that-be.
