In an era of 24-hour news channels, e-mail, and fax machines, does the world need Voice of America? Yes, former USC Annenberg dean and former VOA director Geoffrey Cowan argued at a Dec. 5 breakfast with Orange County business leaders. "CNN is fine for people who live in hotels and speak English," Cowan said, "but most people in the world do not." Cowan explained that while under Taliban rule, 60 80 percent of adult males in Afghanistan listened regularly to the VOAs broadcasts in the Dari and Pashto languages. Cowans speech was third in the USC Orange County Center's Executive Briefings series, which explored relevant topics presented by USC President Steven B. Sample and the Universitys distinguished deans.
